What is Demon Slayer?
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba is a manga series written and illustrated by Koyoharu Gotouge. It was serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine from 2016 to 2020 and collected in 23 volumes. The manga has sold over 150 million copies worldwide and won several awards, including the Manga Taisho Award in 2019.
The manga tells the story of Tanjiro Kamado, a kind-hearted boy who lives with his family in the mountains during the Taisho era (1912-1926) in Japan. One day, he returns home from selling charcoal to find his family massacred by demons, except for his sister Nezuko who has been turned into one. He meets Giyu Tomioka, a demon slayer who tells him about the Demon Slayer Corps, a secret organization that fights against demons using special swords called Nichirin Blades. Tanjiro decides to join them and vows to find a way to turn Nezuko back The main characters and their roles
Demon Slayer has a large and diverse cast of characters, each with their own personality, backstory, and skills. Here are some of the main characters and their roles in the story:
Tanjiro Kamado: The protagonist of the series, Tanjiro is a kind-hearted and determined boy who becomes a demon slayer after his family is killed by demons. He uses the Water Breathing and Hinokami Kagura sword styles, and has a keen sense of smell that helps him track down demons and evade their attacks. His goal is to find a way to turn his sister Nezuko back into a human.
Nezuko Kamado: Tanjiro's younger sister, Nezuko is the only survivor of the demon attack that killed their family, but she was turned into a demon herself. Unlike most demons, Nezuko retains some of her human emotions and memories, and can resist the urge to eat humans. She fights alongside Tanjiro using her enhanced strength, speed, and agility, as well as her Blood Demon Art: Exploding Blood. She usually travels inside a wooden box that Tanjiro carries on his back.
Zenitsu Agatsuma: A cowardly and nervous boy who becomes a demon slayer along with Tanjiro. He uses the Thunder Breathing sword style, but he can only perform one technique: the Thunderclap and Flash, which allows him to move at lightning speed for a brief moment. He usually unleashes his full potential when he falls asleep or faints from fear. He has a crush on Nezuko and often tries to impress her.
Inosuke Hashibira: A wild and aggressive boy who becomes a demon slayer along with Tanjiro. He was raised by boars in the mountains and wears a boar's head as a mask. He uses the Beast Breathing sword style, which mimics the movements and senses of animals. He wields two serrated swords that he sharpened himself. He is very competitive and often challenges Tanjiro to fights.
Kanao Tsuyuri: A quiet and stoic girl who is a demon slayer and the adopted sister of Shinobu Kocho, the Insect Hashira. She uses the Flower Breathing sword style, which is derived from Water Breathing. She also has an enhanced sense of sight that allows her to see the smallest details and movements. She was trained by Shinobu to flip a coin to make decisions, as she had no will of her own due to her abusive past.
Genya Shinazugawa: A hot-headed and rude boy who is a demon slayer and the younger brother of Sanemi Shinazugawa, the Wind Hashira. He does not use a sword, but instead relies on guns and explosives to fight demons. He also has the ability to consume demon flesh and gain some of their powers, such as regeneration and enhanced strength. He hates demons for killing his family and injuring his brother.
What happened in Demon Slayer Season 3?
Demon Slayer Season 3, which aired in 2021, covered the Swordsmith Village arc, where Tanjiro and his allies went to a village of swordsmiths to repair their weapons and learn new techniques. The season was full of intense action, emotion, and surprises, as the demon slayers faced two powerful Upper Rank demons who invaded the village: Hantengu and Gyokko.
A recap of the Swordsmith Village arc
The Swordsmith Village arc began with Tanjiro traveling to the secret Swordsmith Village to have his sword repaired by Hotaru Haganezuka, the smith who made it. He was accompanied by Nezuko, who had recently awakened her ability to conquer the sun and exist as a demon in the daylight. Along the way, they met Mitsuri Kanroji, the Love Hashira, who was also heading to the village. Mitsuri instantly took a liking to Nezuko and became her friend.
At the village, Tanjiro also encountered Muichiro Tokito, the Mist Hashira, who was training under Kotetsu, a young swordsmith. Muichiro was harsh and indifferent to Tanjiro and Kotetsu, as he had lost most of his memories due to a demon attack in his past. Tanjiro also met Genya Shinazugawa, a demon slayer who did not use a sword, but instead relied on guns and explosives to fight demons. Genya also had the ability to consume demon flesh and gain some of their powers, such as regeneration and enhanced strength. Genya hated demons for killing his family and injuring his brother Sanemi, the Wind Hashira.
