Lip Balm or Lip Salve is a substance topically applied to the lips of the mouth to relieve chapped or dry lips and cold sores. Lip gloss is similar in the fact that it is topically applied to the lips of the mouth, but generally has only cosmetic properties. The primary purpose of lip balm is to provide an occlusive layer on the lip surface to seal moisture in the lips and protect them from external exposure. Dry air, cold temperatures and wind all have a drying effect on skin by drawing moisture away from the body. Lips are particularly vulnerable because the skin is so thin, and thus they are often the first to present signs of dryness. The occlusive materials like wax prevent moisture loss and maintain lip comfort while flavorants, colorants, sunscreens and various other ingredients can provide additional, specific benefits.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE: Heat our All-Natural Lip Balm Base until melted in a microwaveable container -- microwaves vary like crazy, so taking the relative power of yours into account, heat the lip balm base until melted (I make about two ounces of lip balm at a time, and my turbocharged micro takes about a minute and a half to melt it down). Add your favorite Sweet Cakes flavor oil and our All-Natural Sweetener if desired, then pour into lip balm tube. (We offer a snazzy jars selection!) If you prefer a stiffer balm, combine the All-Natural Lip Balm Base with beeswax.ANOTHER USE: This lip balm base also makes a perfect salve. The addition of our Lavender 40/42 essential oil would make a really basic, all-purpose salve; for the more ambitious, try infusing it with all sorts of healing plants and herbs. Hardly! The internet is so full of artificial bases that I'd become convinced that it must be scientifically impossible to create a natural one -- and then what should come flying in over the transom but this balmy beauty, easy to use and natural in every way. When it comes to making lip balm, I can't imagine using anything but this base now -- the consistency of the finished product is better than anything I ever came up with blending oils (yes, even fancy-pants, high-priced oils like jojoba and kukui nut) from scratch. Ready-to-use lip balm bases help to simplify DIY cosmetic formulations for a quicker and more efficient production process every time. NDA's Lip Balm Base is composed of natural emollients with antioxidant properties, including Natural Wax Jelly, Beeswax, Almond Sweet Oil, Coconut Fractionated Oil, Lanolin Anhydrous, Vitamin E USP, and Hempseed Oil
NDA's Lip Balm Cosmetic Base is a multi-purpose product that can be adapted to formulate perfume balms, also called solid perfumes. This base can also be used to easily produce foot salves, body butters, lotion bars, vapor rubs, and moisturizing cuticle sticks.
NDA's Lip Balm Cosmetic Base is odorless and colorless, which makes it easy to personalize it with the following oil-soluble additives. It is important to avoid adding water-based additives, as these ingredients will not bind properly with the base and will disperse to become isolated from the blend.
What are they?Colorants are oil-soluble and skin-safe pigments. They can be found in both liquid and powdered forms. *Do not attempt to use colorants for candles, soaps, or food in lip balm formulations.
What are they?Sweeteners are natural, plant-based substances that function as substitutes for sugar. They are available in both liquid and powdered forms. Popular sweeteners include Aspartame, Stevia, and Saccharin, all of which can be added to various lip products.
The lips are the most neglected area of skin when it comes to applying sunscreen, and lip balm bases, finished lip balms, and other lip products alone do not, unfortunately, guarantee sun-protective properties simply by concealing the skin of the lips. Additionally, applying sunblock directly to the lips can potentially cause skin irritation for some sensitive skin types.
To make all-natural sun-protective lip balms, choose one of the suggested Natural Butters with high SPF from the chart above. Alternatively, any Carrier Oil can be chosen. Recommended oils include Castor and Jojoba.
As a general rule, blend 3 parts carrier oil to 1 part beeswax, and add 1 part plant-based butter if using. Coarsely chop the beeswax or use beeswax pastilles. Place beeswax, butter, and oils in a small pot or glass measuring cup and gently heat in the top of a double-boiler until the beeswax and butters have melted. Once melted, remove from the stovetop and add essential oils and vitamin E oil (a natural preservative). Immediately pour the mixture into clear or white tubes. You can also purchase tins or glass jars for a more manual application. Allow to cool completely before placing caps onto the lip balm containers. 041b061a72
